MDC Police Lt. John E. Hagerty, age 89 of Salem, died Monday June 30, 2014 at the Rosewood Nursing Home Peabody following a short illness. Born in Salem the son of the late Edward and Nellie (Fitzgerald) Hagerty, he was raised and educated at St. James School and Salem High School. Following his graduation from Salem High School, he joined the United States Army proudly serving his country while stationed in England. Following his discharge, he was appointed to the MDC Police Department. His primary tour of duty was along Revere Beach, where he retired from his service with the Metropolitan District Commission as a Lieutenant.
Survived by many nieces and nephews, he was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret R. Hagerty and Mary Hagerty Mercier.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 10:00 AM in St James Church, 156 Federal St, Salem. Relatives and friend are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. At his request there are no visiting hours.
