Obituary

John Temple Gill, III

August 24, 1938 – January 29, 2014

John Temple Gill, III, age 75, of Salem, Massachusetts, died on January 29, 2014 at the Salem Hospital ICU of respiratory failure and complications from pneumonia and flu after a long struggle with COPD. His daughter Temple Gill and her mother Mollie Gill were by his side.

A native of Richmond, Virginia and the only child of John T. Gill, Jr. and Elnora Thompson Gill, he graduated from John Marshall High School and the University of Virginia where he was a proud member of the Theta Tau and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternities. After college, he served in the U.S. Army as a 2nd lieutenant in the 5th Howitzer Battalion, 35th Artillery as a forward observer. He married Mollie Davis Drew Gill in 1962, and after living in Georgia, Richmond, Rochester, and Terra Haute, they settled in Cincinnati, Ohio where they lived for 38 years.

An electrical engineer by trade, John was a manufacturer's representative in the paper, foil, and blown film industry, and owned his own small business. He was also a renowned tinkerer and gadget-lover. It was not unusual for him to take apart a car engine or restore an antique lamp for enjoyment, he installed most of the automatic garage door openers in the neighborhood, and was the first on the block to own a snow-blower, a microwave oven, and a VCR.

John loved the ocean and looking for sharks teeth on the beach, and was delighted to be able to watch the surf anytime he'd like after moving to Salem, MA in 2005 to be closer to his daughter and her family. He had a wonderful wry sense of humor, an appreciation of words and crossword puzzles, was an avid sports fan (especially golf), and made delicious eggnog at Christmas.

He is survived by his daughter Temple, her mother Mollie, his son-in-law Christopher Yens, and grandsons Sebastian and Duncan.
