Obituary

John "Jack" Joseph Flynn, born September 28, 1926 in Brooklyn NY passed away in his home on the morning of October 25, 2014 after a long illness. Mr. Flynn was a life-long resident of Salem, MA.


Jack graduated from Salem Classical High School in 1943 and Tufts University in 1948. He served in the US Navy as quartermaster on the USS MT Olympus (AGC-8), an amphibious command ship in the Pacific during 1945, and served again as electronics officer in the Atlantic from 1950 through 1952.
Jack was employed by the X-ray Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation, the Atomic Power and Harmonic Drive departments of United Shoe Machinery Corporation, and was director of new business planning for various optical and electronic product divisions and groups at EG&G Inc. (now Perkin Elmer Inc.) for 27 years.

Since his retirement in 1989, Mr. Flynn was active in activities sponsored by the Top of the Hill gang, an outdoor sport and social organization, as well as the Salem State College Explorers Group, and the R.O.M.E.O's. He loved to ski, read, travel, and spend time with family. He was a lifelong avid golfer, a member of Olde Salem Greens, where he caddied, learned to play golf, had two hole-in-one experiences, but alas, "never really learned to putt".

Jack is survived by his wife, Sylvia Bryce Flynn, his sister Catherine and her husband Harold "Skip" Blake of North Carolina, his sister Sr. Marita Flynn OSF of Florida and sisters in law, Shirley Flynn, Jean O'Toole and Peg Kolodziej. Jack also leaves behind his seven children and their spouses: Mike Flynn, Karen Flynn and her husband Eric Rolfe, Judy Beaulieu and her husband Roger, Cindy Rainville and her husband Tom, Peggy Fraser and her husband Drew, Ruth Flynn, Beth Comeau and her husband Joe. Mr. Flynn was grandfather to Benjamin and Phillip Rolfe, Christopher Beaulieu, Jared Flynn, Jacqueline and Lucas Fraser, and Andrew and Gregory Rainville. Jack also leaves many nieces and nephews. His extended family includes the families of Phillip and Marjorie Bryce, David and Rebecca Smith, and Daniel and Cameron Bryce.

He was pre-deceased by his first wife of 42 years, Jean Cronan Flynn, and his siblings Paul, Robert, and Eileen Flynn, and Ann Belleau.

Mr. Flynn's Funeral will be held on Monday November 3, 2014 from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North St) Salem at 9:15 A.M. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Anne Church, 292 Jefferson Ave., Salem at 10:00 A.M. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Burial in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
