Salem…..
John E. Coughlin, 63, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully Saturday, November 6, 2010, surrounded by the loving company of his family. He was the beloved husband of Annette (Dillon) Coughlin.
John was born in Salem on December 22, 1946. He was a son of John J.
and Helen M. (Doherty) Coughlin, a former Salem City Clerk. He attended
St. Mary's Grammar School and graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School.
John then attended North Shore Community College from 1966-68 and then
completed his education at Suffolk University from 1968 to 1971. He
began working at General Electric Company at its Lynn facility that same
year and continued working there until the week before his death. John
was much beloved by his fellow co-workers.
John particularly enjoyed Irish culture and music. He made trips to the
Emerald Isle as often as he could, most recently returning from a family
reunion last summer, when he toured the country for two weeks. His
beautiful tenor singing voice could be heard everywhere from the shower
to the karaoke bar to the rafters of Salem's St. James Church, where he
sang with the St. James Choir for close to two decades. He was an avid
sports fan who enjoyed playing golf and loudly cheering on his beloved
Boston teams.
In addition to his wife, Annette, John is survived by his four children:
Erin Coughlin Tower and her husband, Chad Tower, of Plainville, Mass.,
William Coughlin and his wife, Ana Lucia Alvarado de Coughlin of Allen,
Texas, Sean Coughlin and his wife, Joanne (Coleman) Coughlin, of Salem,
and Brendan Coughlin, also of Salem. He is also survived by his
identical twin brother and his best friend, Paul Coughlin, of Danvers.
John was also the beaming proud grandfather of Ryan and Matthew Tower,
of Plainville, Ana Sophia Coughlin, of Allen, Texas, Fionn Coughlin, of
Salem, and two more grandchildren due in December 2010 and in March of
