Salem….
John A. Corning, age 85, beloved husband of Corinne Marie (St. Pierre) Corning, of Salem died on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 in the Bedford Veteran's Hospital following a long illness.
A lifelong resident of Salem, he was the son of the late John I. and Johannah K. (Browne) Corning. Mr. Corning proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II. He was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 bronze stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 Bronze Stars. After the service he became a driver for Pickering Oil Company of Salem until his retirement. He also was a proud member of the of the V.F.W Witch City Post 1520 of Salem.
Mr. Corning was dedicated to his family and Church. As a lifelong parishioner of St. James, he dedicated many hours of his time supporting parish activities over the years. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, prepared food for parish activities, worked at the weekly bingo games as well as lending a helping hand whenever needed. He was recognized by St James parish as a recipient of the Ed Whalen award for his many contributions.
John was a proud and devoted husband, father and grandfather who never missed an opportunity to participate in a family event. He enjoyed many years socializing at flea markets and antique shows with his wife Corinne. He took great pride and pleasure in attending all his children and grandchildren's sporting events and school activities. He was always the first to arrive and last to leave the family cookouts where he dominated the grille. He was admired and loved by all.
In addition to his beloved wife of 63 years, Mr. Corning is survived by five children Paul Corning and his wife Nancy of West Boxford, John Corning, Jr. and his wife Virginia of Peabody, James Corning and his wife Gayle of Beverly, Mark Corning and his wife Nancy of Danvers and Gail Reddy of Salem with whom he had resided; a sister Mary Healy and her husband John of Springfield, VA; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother Thomas and a granddaughter Courtney Corning.
His funeral will be held on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 10:00 AM in St James Church 161 Federal St Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North St) Salem Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Beverly.
