Obituary

Marblehead.....

John Washburn Coolidge, Jr., age 76 of Salem died Saturday March 13, 2010, at the North Shore Medical Center, Salem, following a brief and unexpected illness.

Born in Boston, MA, the son of the late John Washburn Coolidge, Sr., and the late Helen Seymour Coolidge, he received a BA from Harvard University in 1956 and an MBA from the University of Virginia Business School in 1964. Coolidge was a Senior Portfolio Manager at Brown Brothers Harriman and Co. from 1964-1999. In an age of specialization, he moved effortlessly and effectively through the full gamut of financial instruments. In stocks, his clients relied on his uncanny ability to separate opportunities from hype. He was equally adept at directing fixed income portfolios, mixing corporate, Treasury and tax-exempt securities. He developed a reputation as the "Go-to-Guy" with his associates and, most importantly, his Brown Brothers' clients.

Coolidge was also a keen 210 sailor, chairman of the Eastern Yacht Club Race Committee from 1981-1983, organizer of three back to back World Championships in the Etchells, Star, and IOD classes in 1981, and the US Olympic Trials in the Finn class in 1988 and 1992.

Coolidge is survived by his daughter, Dr. Jennifer Whitney Coolidge, of London, England; his former wife Helen Stillman Coolidge of Marblehead; his sister Hannah Coolidge Clements and her husband John Alden Clements of Croydon, NH; and three nephews: Benjamin Manson Rice, III, of Framingham, MA, John Coolidge Rice of Greenfield Center, NY, and Christopher Whitney Rice of Berlin, NH. He is sorely missed by all who love him.

His funeral services will be held Sunday May 2, 2010 at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mt. Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA 02138 as follows 11:00 AM-12:00 Service in Story Chapel ;12:00-12:30 PM graveside Burial services to be followed by a Light Lunch Reception in Bigelow Chapel from 12:30 PM-2:30 PM.
