It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joao R. Sampaio, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and esteemed member of the community. Joao peacefully departed this world on November 5, 2023, at the age of 85, in Salem, Massachusetts, where he resided.

Born on June 28, 1938, in Portugal, Joao was the cherished son of Francisco and Filomena Sampaio. In 1964, he entered into holy matrimony with the love of his life, Maria Sampaio, in a joyous ceremony held on Easter Sunday. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey spanning nearly six decades, filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.

Throughout his professional career, Joao dedicated 30 years of service to Bicknell and Fuller, a testament to his unwavering dedication and strong work ethic. Beyond his professional achievements, he found true fulfillment in his role as a devoted husband and family man. Joao exemplified the virtues of love and commitment, serving as a constant pillar of support and guidance to his wife Maria, his daughters Isabel Sampaio-Medeiros and Elisa DeMelo, and their families.

A passionate traveler, Joao and Maria embraced life to the fullest, adventuring across the globe together. Each year, they embarked on exciting journeys, forging unforgettable memories in every corner of the world. Their shared wanderlust was a testament to their deep connection and unbreakable bond.

Joao's involvement in the Holy Christ Society highlighted his strong spiritual devotion, and he found solace and strength in his faith throughout his life.

Left to cherish his memory and carry on his spirit of love, Joao leaves behind his beloved wife, Maria Moniz Sampaio, his adoring daughters Isabel Sampaio-Medeiros, Elisa DeMelo, and her loving spouse, Jose. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Ashley DeMelo and her spouse, Paula, Branden DeMelo, Sean Sampaio-Medeiros, Phyllisha Santiago and her spouse, Oscar, as well as his great-grandchildren, Amelia Santiago and Adryanna Santiago.

Visiting hours to honor and pay respects to Joao will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Murphy Funeral Home, located at 85 Federal St. Salem. A funeral mass, celebrating Joao's remarkable life, will take place on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 12:00 PM at St. Thomas Church located at 1 Margin St. Peabody, MA 01960.

In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in Joao R. Sampaio's honor, to be distributed by his wife Maria to charitable organizations dear to Joao's heart.
