Obituary

Joanne L Gallo passed away peacefully Monday afternoon at Devereux House nursing home in Marblehead Ma. Joanne was born in Salem, the youngest child of Giuseppe Gallo and Brigita (DiPietro) Gallo.

Joanne never married, but led an adventurous life visiting many parts of the world. In the 1960s she worked in Washington D.C. and for the state department in Cambodia. She returned to school in Canada and obtained her masters degree in social work. She supervised a refugee camp in Thailand and later worked in the United States helping to re-settle Cambodian refugees.  In The latter part of her career Joanne worked as a social worker for the Commonwealth of Mass and finally as a nursing home inspector.

As her Sister Pauline aged, Joanne moved back to the family home in Salem to become her primary caregiver. After Pauline's passing Joanne lived in Swampscott and then at Putnam Farm assisted living in Danvers before moving to Devereux House.

She was predeceased by her siblings; Joseph Gallo, Pauline Gallo, Michael Gallo and Ann (Gallo) Liani. She is survived by her niece Margery Armstrong and nephew Robert Liani Jr. She was loved by many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visiting hours for Joanne will take place Sunday, February 11, 2018 from 4 to 7PM at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street (corner of North St.) Salem, MA 01970.  Her funeral service will take place Monday, February 12, 2018 at 10AM, also at the Murphy Funeral Home.  Donations in her memory may be made to the Peabody Essex Museum, 161 Essex St. Salem, MA 01970.
