JoAnn L'Italien-York, 72, of Salem, wife of the late Javan D York, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2024 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on August 1, 1952, loving daughter of the late William Gongas and Simonne , Cote" Gongas, JoAnn grew up in Salem and graduated from Salem High School. JoAnn spent 20+ years working at Henry's Market in Beverly, where she became a beloved figure.
She had a deep love for football, with the New England Patriots being her favorite team. Watching games, cheering them on, and spending time with her family during football season were some of her greatest joys. JoAnn had a passion for reading and was an avid owl collector.
Beloved mother of Kerry "L'Italien" Thyne of Georgia and devoted grandmother of Ryan Gates, Amber Gates, Joseph Broyer, Dylan Broyer and Connor Broyer and great grandmother of Tristan Gates. She was the sister of George Gongas of Peabody and his late wife Laurel Gongas, Patricia Gookin and husband Dana Gookin of Swampscott and several nieces and nephews
JoAnn's memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Memorial contributions may be made to Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty Street, Danvers, MA 01923.
