Salem Joan Marie Rogers, 85, of Salem, passed away Friday, April 6, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Joan was devoted to her late husband Roger, and together they shared 62 years of marriage before his passing in January of 2017.
Joan was born in Boston and raised in Somerville. She was a member of the graduating class of 1950 at Matignon high school in Cambridge. After graduation, she worked for New England Telephone until she began raising her family. She married the love of her life, Roger, in 1954 and moved to Salem shortly after, in 1957. She returned working for New England Telephone in 1979, where she stayed until retirement.
Joan loved to travel with her husband Roger; her favorite places included Cape Cod, Florida and Maine. The most important part of her life was her family, who she loved and cherished very much.
Joan is survived by her three children: Michele MacDonald, of Salem, David Rogers and his wife Judy, of Somersworth, NH, and Tracy Salehi and her husband Tony, of Salem. In addition, Joan leaves four grandchildren: Melanie Longo and her husband Christopher, of Danvers, Thomas Dixey and his wife Amanda, of Salem, Andrew Rogers and his wife Katie of Manchester, NH, and Kelsey Baker and her fiancé Daniel Moss, of Melrose; along with three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Judy Murray and her husband Thomas of Hampstead, NY, and her sister-in-law Marie Snow and her husband Jim of Peabody, and many nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her late sister Claire Castagna.
Joan will be missed by a large, extended circle of family and friends. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the AOH Division 18 in Salem and served as president, and was once selected Irish woman of the year.
Visiting hours for Joan will take place on Tuesday April 10, 2018 from 4 to 8 PM at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (corner of North St.), Salem, MA 01970. Funeral will be held from the funeral home on Wednesday April 11, 2018 at 9AM with a Mass of Christian Burial held at St. James Church, 160 Federal St., Salem, MA at 10AM. Interment will follow at St. Marys Cemetery, 226 North St., Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
