Joan Marie (Callahan) Fix passed away on November 29 at home, surrounded by her loving family.

Joan waged an epic battle against cancer, but was unable to defeat death in the way that she commanded life. Joan was the devoted daughter of the late James P. and Mary Elizabeth (Rafter), born on December 5, 1953. A 1971 graduate of Salem High School and lifelong resident, Joan was a true Salem "girl." Joan was extremely proud of her Salem roots and, in particular, her lifelong family home with its murals of Salem's past glory lovingly painted by her grandmother many decades ago.

With degrees in education and finance, Joan began her career with Naumkeag Trust Company, eventually rising to Branch Administrator with Eastern Bank. Joan worked in the Massachusetts State House for many years as an Aide to State Representative J. Michael Ruane of Salem. Following her service to the residents of Salem Joan served as a Deputy Collector of Taxes with the City of Salem. Prior to her retirement she served as an Office Manager for a North Shore business.

Joan was very involved in the Salem community and selflessly gave of her time to a variety of local organizations, many to benefit the youth of Salem. For many years she served on the Scholarship Committee of the Mack Industrial School Board and the Salem YMCA which, at one point, became her home away from home. She provided wise counsel as a long-time member of its Board of Directors, eventually assuming the role of President. Joan and David were long-time contributors to and supporters of Y initiatives and projects, including the restoration of Ames Hall. Joan was a trusted friend, mentor and role model.

Joan had a surprising way of being the first to know what was happening around town. If you wanted to know something, all you had to do was ask Joan. For many years she could be found having coffee with "the ladies" on Saturday mornings at a local coffee shop, or hosting or enjoying tea on Monday afternoons at the homes of her many circle friends of multiple generations and many talents.

Joan often developed special relationships with the children of her many friends, giving extra attention and encouragement where needed. Joan and David became honorary "Auntie and Uncle" to many, rejoicing in their accomplishments as they matured.

It wasn't a true Fourth of July without watching the Willows Horribles Parade from the front deck of The Cottage, a Lobster Roll lunch, along with popcorn from E.W. Hobbs. Joan also enjoyed relaxing weekends and vacations at her beloved retreat in Northwood, New Hampshire.

Joan and David were devoted members of "The Ten". The five couples were friends and neighbors who shared in one another's happy days and who supported one another during challenging life experiences. Hosting years of dinners before the Hamilton Hall Christmas Dance and celebrating the New Year together with brunch on January 1 were trademarks of their shared love of these events and of each other.

In addition to her husband David, Joan is survived by her sister Deborah A. (Debbie) Callahan, of Salem; "Norm", her dedicated feline friend, and her lifelong best friend, her "sister", Kathleen "Kitty" Soper, along with many longtime friends and acquaintances whose lives will be a little less bright by her passing. Joan is predeceased by her parents and older sister Catherine E. Callahan.
