Jennifer W. Pitman age 57, a lifelong resident of Salem, died Tuesday afternoon following a courageous fight with gastric cancer with her sister, family, and close friends at her side.

Born in Salem the daughter of the late Lester E. and Guinevere (Quimby) Pitman, she was graduated from Salem High School in the Class of 1968. She then received her teaching degree in elementary education, in which her wonderful ways with children were exemplified in her substitute teaching and private tutoring on the North Shore especially in Salem and Marblehead.

Additionally, she devoted 39 years of her life as a compassionate and caring nurse's aide working the 11P.M. -7A.M shift at Shaughnessy Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital until becoming ill this past October.

She especially enjoyed the Halloween season and Heritage days in August as well as her Favorite pastimes of gardening, cooking, and shopping. Jennifer loved spending time with her sister and brother in law, and spoiling her three nieces and nephews.

Her personality embodied a generosity and unconditional love that was felt and appreciated by all of her friends, patients, co-workers, and family.

She is survived by a sister and brother in law Melissa and her husband Edward Machernis and their three children Nolan, Emily and Abigail Machernis all of Warren, NJ.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, March 1, at 11:00 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North ST) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
