Jeanne C. (Raymond) O'Neil, age 97, of Marblehead, died Wednesday afternoon in Salem Hospital following a brief illness. She was predeceased in 1992, by her husband of 59 years, Leonard O'Neil.
She was born in Notre Dame du-Portage, Canada, the daughter of the late Ludger and Alice (Lebel) Raymond. Mrs. O'Neil often reminisced about her wonderful childhood growing up on the family farm along the St. Lawrence River. Mrs. O'Neil enjoyed riding horses and learned blacksmithing from her father. Mrs. O'Neil then became a nanny for a family on Marblehead Neck. She enjoyed going to Devereaux Beach where she met her husband to be. Soon thereafter they married, settled in Marblehead and raised their family. A dedicated wife and mother, she enjoyed staying at home with her family. She often looked forward to Sundays when the extended family would spend the day together. In 1957 she took great pride in becoming a U.S. Citizen.
Later in life, she became employed by Hood Sailmakers, where she had many wonderful friends.
Mrs. O'Neil is survived by a son Dennis and his wife Virginia O'Neil of Marblehead; a sister Delia Riley of Salem; three granddaughters Pamela Roland of Lynn, Kathleen and her husband Rolfe Lofmark of Lynn and Patricia O'Neil of Marblehead; four great grandchildren Amanda, Richard "Rick", and Kelly Roland and Madison Lofmark all of Lynn; her beloved cat, "Bailey" and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sister Evana Gamache and Irene "Yvonne" Ahern.
Her funeral will be held on Monday at 10:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2 to 6 P.M. Interment will be in Star of the Sea Cemetery, Marblehead.
