Jay Marie Palermo, devoted wife of James J. Barton of Salem died at home, Wednesday, September 19, 2012 following a lengthy illness.

The daughter of Elsie (Pasquale) Palermo and the late Joseph Palermo, she was raised and educated in Revere. She was a graduate of Revere High School and U Mass Amherst.

Her career began in Statistical Consulting for various companies including Digital where she and her husband had met. She later pursued her Master's Degree in Education at Boston University and began teaching math at Hopkinton High School until becoming ill.

A person of strong religious beliefs, she was drawn to move to Salem, by it's heritage and culture and also enjoying the benefit of being closer to her parents and family.

A devoted and active mother, she was very involved in her children's lives, encouraging both their musical and athletic pursuits. More recently she has been a strong advocate for the American Cancer Society.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by two sons Michael James and Robert Kenneth Barton of Salem; two brothers Paul Palermo and his wife Tina of Tewksbury and Edward Palermo and his wife Linda of Wilmington and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (Cor of North St) Salem on Monday at 8:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd., Salem at 9:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours are Sunday from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home. Internment at St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
