Obituary

Dr. Janice Elizabeth Tedford (Hopkinson) died unexpectedly in her home on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, just a few hours into her 72 nd birthday.  She was born in Cambridge, MA and moved to Cumberland, Maine with her family when she was a young girl. She attended school in Cumberland and graduated from Greely High school in 1968, where she would go on to attend Moody Bible College in Chicago. While in Chicago, she met her future husband, Stan. She lived in Missouri, Kansas and Colorado before returning to her home state of Maine in 1989. After her oldest daughter graduated high school, she and her husband relocated to Massachusetts, living in Beverly for a few years until they settled in Salem. In her mid-forties she felt called to return to school to obtain her Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Gordon College and she then went on to obtain her doctorate in psychology at Antioch University in Keene, NH, which was one of her proudest accomplishments. Fondly known as Betsy to her family and friends, she was a woman who truly lived life to the fullest. Whether she was traveling the globe, spending time with her family, seeing a show at the theater or attending U2 concerts with her daughters and granddaughters, or spending a quiet evening at home with her beloved puppy Kitt, she always made sure to savor each moment of memory making. She also enjoyed teaching psychology courses as an adjunct professor at her alma mater Gordon College, and was a gifted therapist in her private practice in Beverly. She was the loving caretaker for her husband Stan for 16 years after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2005, until his passing in September 2021. One of Betsy's greatest gifts was her ability to bring stories about her many travels and adventures to life. From ziplining over the Rocky Mountains in Montana to whitewater rafting in the gorges of Colorado, she always had the most exciting tales to tell. She is survived by her daughter Candice Pierce and son in law Peter Pierce of Windham, Maine; daughter Angela Doucet and son in law Michael Doucet of Danvers, Massachusetts; granddaughter Emily Magoon and fiancé Andrew Sawyer; granddaughter Desiree Bacon; sisters Ellen Shorey and Mary Hoffman; brothers Richard and James Hopkinson; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Stanley Tedford, and her parents Joseph and Janis Hopkinson.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation or the Wounded Warriors Project. A private celebration of life is being planned for a future date. For more information or online guestbook, please visit www.MurphyFuneralHome.com or call 978-744-0497.
