James W. Russell age 78 of Marblehead died at home unexpectedly Monday afternoon. He was the former husband of the late Josephine (Amor) Russell and Fedora (Fernald) (Russell) Gatcomb of Jonseport, ME.

A "Header", he was born and educated in Marblehead the son of the late James and Louise (Hunt) Russell. While in high school, he left school to enter the United States Navy. He loved to travel with the Navy and proudly served the country aboard the U.S.S Coral Sea for over three years until he was discharged.

Following his discharge he owned and operated Jim Russell Trucking for many years until his retirement. One of his many projects included the demolition of the Rockmere Hotel and 11 homes that surrounded it to allow for the construction of Glover's Landing.

A town fixture and well known character, he enjoyed his frequent visits to Dunkin Donuts, Super Sub and Tony's Pizza where he enjoyed lively discussion and debate with many of his friends. In the afternoon he was frequently found at the monument with his friends.

He is survived by two children James L. Russell, Sr., of Bethleham, NH and Janice Flint and her husband David of Danvers; 4 sisters Nancy Gallo and her husband Phil and Sally Byors and her husband David all or Marblehead, Catherine Mancini and her husband Guy of North Andover and Audrey Mitchell of Derry, NH; a sister in law Marilyn Russell of Georgetown; a brother in law Leroy "Robin" Bergeron of Marblehead; five grandchildren Taryn, Kalyn and Dylan Flint, James "Beau" Russell and his wife Cheryl and Brian S. Russell; two great grandchildren Kirstyn and Jordan Russell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother Gifford Russell and a sister Patricia Bergeron.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, March 22 at 12:15 P.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a graveside funeral services at 1:00 P.M. in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M.
