James J. Pollard, MD age 77, husband of Elizabeth A. (Hardy) Pollard of Marblehead, died Friday, January 13, 2012 in Salem Hospital.
Born in Lynn the son of the late Maurice and Theresa (Doherty) Pollard he was raised in Marblehead. Dr. Pollard was graduated from St. John's Prep, Danvers in the Class of 1951 and received his bachelor's degree from Providence College in the Class of 1955. He graduated from the Boston University School of Medicine in the Class of 1959. After his surgical internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis he completed his residency in radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Early in Dr. Pollard's career at Massachusetts General Hospital he was a pioneer in the field of angiography. Later, he entered private practice at Choate Hospital becoming chief of the radiology department. He finished his career at Beverly Hospital.
A dedicated husband, father and grandfather he was a devout and active member of Our Lady Star of Sea Church in Marblehead where he had served on the Parish Council. He was a long time member of the Eastern Yacht Club and an avid sailor and in the winter had enjoyed skiing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Dr. James J. Pollard, Jr. and his wife Noreen Murphy of Newton, Dr. Charles W. Pollard, and his wife Lori Davis Pollard of Marblehead and Thomas J. Pollard of West Hartford, CT; a sister-in-law Linda Wier and her husband David of FL; four grandchildren, Alex, Casey, Katie and Jilly Pollard; three nephews Paul Wier of FL, John Pollard of VA and Robert Pollard of Toronto, Canada.
He was predeceased by a brother Terry Pollard.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 81 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Interment will be in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Pollard's name to Evelyn Lilly Lutz Foundation (for medical education) at the Beverly Hospital 85 Herrick St. Beverly, MA 01915.
