James "Jim" Mahoney, age 63, husband of Mary E. (Whalen) Mahoney, with whom he shared 21 years of marriage, died Sunday morning December 4, 2011 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born in Somerville, the son of the late Daniel J. and Edna M. (McCully) Mahoney, Mr. Mahoney attended Somerville High School, Huntington Prep and Merrimac College.
Mr. Mahoney joined the Boston and Maine Railroad in 1972 as a conductor and in 1976 he became a Locomotive Engineer. In 1987 Mr. Mahoney joined Amtrak. Later, in 2003 he joined the newly established Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail (MBCR). A member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Local 57, he retired with in December of 2009 with over 40 years of railroad service, the most recent on the Newbury/Rockport Line.
Mr. Mahoney was a summer resident of Chase's Ocean Grovel in Dennisport for over 50 years. An avid reader of non fiction, he enjoyed reading about the Civil War, World War II and Ireland. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Local 57.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sisters in law, Rosemary Boudreau of Lynn and Shelley Doyle and her husband Joe of Peabody; seven nieces and nephews, Joe and Meghan Doyle, Katelyn and Chris Angland, Tara and Ben Albaugh, Maura Doyle, Paul Boudreau, Patrick Boudreau and Jen Riley; Brian and Heather Boudreau and several great nieces and great nephews. Mr. Mahoney was the son in law of the late Arthur and Claire Whalen formerly of Peabody.
His Funeral will be held on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 9:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North St.) Salem, MA to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd, Salem, MA. . Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
