James F. Hanlon
James Hanlon, 83, Husband of Mary F. (Nolan) Hanlon, passed away peacefully on May 6th, 2011 at the North Shore Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born in Lynn on June 15, 1927, son of Peter M. Hanlon of Carlingford, Ireland and Ella Ireson of Massachusetts. He graduated from Saugus High School and was drafted in 1945 into the United States Army and served as a military guard during the Second World War. He then attended Boston College and graduated in 1951. He moved to Marblehead in 1965.
James became a correspondent for United Press International and then served as an advertising and public relations executive at Bird and Son, Newsome & Company, Arnold Advertising, Marc, Johns and Lowe, and The Sheraton Corporation. He was a writer and campaigner for political figures, including President John F. Kennedy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy.
A gifted wordsmith, James was an avid writer, award-winning poet and a charter member of the Boston College Writer's Workshop under the late Weston "Sandy" Jenks. James was a skilled sailor who for decades navigated along the North Shore coast. A Marblehead resident for over 40 years, James was an active member of his community and parish.
Surviving him in addition to his loving wife Mary are five children, Maria Hanlon of Charlestown; Katy Hanlon of Arlington; Susan Hanlon Rigby and her husband Morgan of Marblehead; Ann Hanlon of Santa Monica, CA and Peter Hanlon and his wife Cathleen Carr of New York City; one sister Joan Curley of Naples, FL; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Peter Hanlon.
Mr. Hanlon's Funeral will be held from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., ( cor of North St.) Salem, on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead at 10:00 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
