James Joseph Barton, 79, of Salem passed away on June 28 2023.

James was born on October 13, 1943, to Peter and Elizabeth Barton in Queens, NY. James grew up in Rhode Island and attended the University of Rhode Island. Upon graduation, James served in the military as an enlisted officer and saw overseas combat in Vietnam during the Thet Offensive.

After completing his military service, James began a career in the tech industry, moving around the country. In the 1980s, James began working for the company Digital and relocated closer to his family in Massachusetts. He met his wife, Jay, while they worked there together. Jim and Jay had two children, Michael and Robert.

In 2007, James retired and moved to Salem with his wife, spending his time walking down by the water with her and her dog.

James was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Peter, his wife, Jay, his brother, Peter Jr., and his sister, Beth. He is survived by his sons, Michael and Robert, his brother Richard his two grandchildren, Mila James and Norah Jay, and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will take place on Friday July 7, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Murphy Funeral Home, located at 85 Federal St. Salem. A service will following beginning at 11:00 AM followed by the burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, 226 North St. Salem.
