James Pappas, also known as James Papacostantenou, age 81, husband of the late Irene J. (Dokos) Pappas died at home on Wednesday evening, February 16, 2011.

Born in Peabody, the son of the late Nicholas and Irene (Loulathakis) Papacostantenou, he was educated in Peabody schools and Peabody High School. Mr. Pappas attended college and worked in Peabody's local leather shops until joining the United States Navy during the Korean War. His duty assignments during his three years of service included a tour aboard the USS Roosevelt.

Following his discharge, Mr. Pappas was employed by Transitron as well as Sylvania Lighting for several years. He then became employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Employment Security for 20 years assisting veterans with job placement until his retirement.

He and his wife then owned and operated the Lion's Gates Gift Shop in the Hawthorne Hotel, Salem, for many years.

Mr. Pappas is survived by three children, Nicholas Papacostantenou of Salem, with whom he resided, Stacey Pappas of Salem and Zoe and her husband John Thibodeau of Derry, NH; a brother George Pappas of Peabody; three sisters Patricia Irving of Swampscott, Helen Pappas and Elizabeth Crocker both of Peabody and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral services will be held on Monday, February 21, 2011 at 11:30 AM from the
Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St.) Salem to be followed by funeral services at 12 Noon in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will be immediately before the funeral from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
