Obituary

Master Gunnery Sergeant, Jack McCloskey, United States Marine Corps, Retired, passed away peacefully at home on June 28th at the age of 87.

Jack was married to the late Marijane (Walsh) McCloskey for 62 years. Jack and Jane met while summering in Nahant in 1946 and married at St. Ignatius Church at Boston College in 1950. They enjoyed sharing their time in Marblehead and Vieques Island, PR.


Jack was a graduate of Salem High School and Boston College University. Son of the late Donald F. and Marie (McGrath) McCloskey, Jack grew up in Salem with his brothers Joseph of Andover and the late , James, Donald, and Robert and his cousin Marie Ward of Marblehead.


Jack was a career Marine who retired as a Master Gunnery Sargent and later proudly served as Marblehead Harbormaster He was also an avid one-design and ocean racing sailor.


Jack was a devoted husband to Jane, loving father to his seven children: Michael, Martha, Mark, Mary, Meghan, Matthew (late) and Madeleine McCloskey (Anderson) and his 14 grandchildren: Jay, Anna, Michaela, Jorgen, Ingrid, Ralph, Lexi, Austin, Dylan, Lindsay, Jack, Walter, Bobby and Elena. Jack enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a friend to all and always had a big smile and a great story to tell.


A Mass of Celebration of Jack's Life will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem.
