Irene M. (MacDonald) Wholley age 88 wife of the late Joseph "Hap" Wholley of Salem died Monday morning in the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home.

She was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia the daughter of the late William and Margaret (MacLean) MacDonald. At the age of three, her family moved to Beverly where she was raised and educated, graduating from Beverly High School in the Class of 1938. Mrs. Wholley was employed at New England Merchants Bank in Boston, where met her husband, married and began a family.

At the age of 37, her husband died, leaving Mrs. Wholley with five children. A determined mother, with family at the center of her life, she returned to work as the bookkeeper for Allen Hardware in Peabody for many years until retiring at the age of 65.

Mrs. Wholley is survived by five children Daniel and Claire Wholley of Salem, William and Donna Wholley of Salem, Joseph and Maryanne Wholley formerly of Belmont, MA now of Basking Ridge, NJ, Loucif and M. Kathleen Wholley of Salem and John and Donna Wholley of Beverly; 11 grandchildren Rebecca and her husband Todd Dawson, Samuel and his wife Gayle Wholley, Matthias and his wife Kashia Wholley, Erin and her husband Matt Devitt, Colleen Wholley, Laura and Jay Wholley, Mojo and Anissa Talantikite, Billy and Jake Wholley; five great grandchildren Grace, Luke, Teagan, Braiden, and Riley and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers Alexander and John MacDonald and a sister Catherine MacDonald.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church on the Salem/Peabody line. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
