Hilda M. (Leavitt) Thompson, age 86, wife of the late Robert Thompson, of Marblehead died at Grosvenor Park Nursing Home, Salem on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 following a short illness.

Born in Salem the daughter of the late Ralph and Margaret (Reilly) Leavitt, she was educated in local schools, graduating from Salem High School in the Class of 1943. She then began what would become a 42 year career at General Electric in the administrative offices West Lynn. Mrs. Thompson retired from the Wilmington, MA facility in 1985.

In the summer, she had enjoyed her annual visits to Gurnsey Island at Lake Winnipesauke. Her avocation was knitting. Mrs. Thompson took great pride in the children's motif sweaters and traveled to various shows selling her work. Mrs. Thompson also loved traveling with her husband, visiting Japan and Europe.

She is survived by a son, Tommy L. Thompson of Marblehead; four grandchildren Maddy, Colin, Katlyn, and Becky; a sister Christina Shultz and her husband Harvey of Marblehead and four nephews Larry Shultz of Marblehead, Brian Shultz of Danvers, James Shultz of Laguna Niguel, CA and Barry Leavitt of Rhode Island.

She was predeceased by a son John L. Thompson and a bother Ralph Leavitt, Jr..

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 10:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St,(cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM In Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, MA 01945. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Interment will be in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
