Swampscott
Herbert C. Heggie, age 92, husband of the late Marjorie (Lecraw) Heggie, died Tuesday morning February 24, 2015 at the Devereux House in Marblehead. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Bessie (Brown) Heggie. He attended Swampscott Public Schools and graduated from Swampscott High School in 1940. After attending Northeastern University, he was employed by Beech-Nut/Life Savers working as a salesman for the company for over 40 years until his retirement.
Mr. Heggie was an active Freemason for over 60 years, most recently as a member of the Philanthropic Lodge in Marblehead. He also served as secretary to the Finance Committee for the town of Swampscott. As a longtime member of the First Church in Swampscott, Congregational, he served on numerous boards, including the committee responsible for purchasing and installing a new organ for the sanctuary. He also enjoyed singing in the choir. Mr. Heggie loved travelling and spending time at his cabin in Limerick, ME. He enjoyed wood- working and was constantly busy with small projects around the house.
Surviving him are his two sons, C. Scott Heggie and his wife Ruth of Swampscott, and Keith Heggie and his wife Terri of Salem, his four grandchildren, T.J McNeil, Terry Newton and her husband Eugene, Kevin Heggie, Matthew Heggie and several nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Janice Rideout and his brother Malcolm Heggie.
His Funeral Service will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor. of North St.) Salem on Friday at 12:00 Noon. Visiting hours will be held prior to the services from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Burial in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
