Henry F. Conwell, age 91, husband of the late Wilma (Joy) Conwell of Peabody, died Monday evening January 11, 2010 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers.
Born in Salem the son of the late Henry J. and Georgianne (Sansoucy) Conwell, he was educated in Salem schools. Once he completed his education at Salem High School, Mr. Conwell was employed by General Electric for two years in Lynn until joining the United States Navy at the outbreak of World War II. Honorably discharged, he had served in the Pacific theater of operation and was the recipient of several medals including the Philippine Liberation Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with 2 stars. Mr. Conwell was a member of the Amvets and the Peabody V.F. W Post 1011 in Peabody.
A hard working person, often working two jobs at the same time he was employed by Charlie Arrigo Fruit and Vegetable, Surrette Battery, Mayflower Cleansers and Jimmy's Allenhurst. Later he was employed in the City of Salem Park Department under then Mayor Collins, the Wenham Golf Course and A.C. Lawrence Leather Company. Eventually he returned to G.E in 1966 where he finished his career until retiring in 1984.
He is survived by four children, Cynthia Conwell of Houston, TX, Ronald Conwell and his wife Jean of Peabody, Robert Conwell and his wife Lorraine of Lynn and Brenda Halpern of Peabody; his longtime friend Howard Halpern of Salem; two sisters, Alice St. Pierre of Peabody and Rita Turcotte of Salem; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three sisters Gertrude Godfrey and twins Anita Conwell and Beatrice Norby and a brother Edward Conwell.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010 in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. Salem. Visitation will be immediately before the service on Saturday from 2:00P.M. to 4:00 P.M..
