Marblehead- Helen Osgood Webb, known to all as “Happy,” passed away peacefully on November 1, 2026, at The Mariner in Marblehead, MA, of Parkinson’s disease. She was 86.
Upon meeting Happy, most remarked on the suitability of her name. Happy was widely beloved, but most of all by her three children and eight grandchildren, who knew the way to her heart (and a fresh batch of cookies) was a smooth piece of blue sea glass. Born on February 21, 1940, Happy was the only child of Charles Franklin Osgood Jr. and Helen Upham Osgood. She grew up in Ridgewood, NJ, attended Ridgewood High School, and graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in English.
Happy married the love of her life, Henley Ross Webb, on July 23, 1966, in South Dartmouth, MA. They raised their children in Marblehead, where Happy was a much-loved piano-playing nursery school teacher at Old North Nursery and Tower schools, as well as a youth soccer coach.
Happy had boundless energy. She loved tennis and liked golf; she also skied, windsurfed, and played paddle tennis, badminton, and the piano. She gardened, baked her signature chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies, jogged, and walked her English Cocker Spaniels off leash whenever she could get away with it. Happy was an enthusiastic member of the Garden Club of Buzzards Bay, and enjoyed tending to Nonquitt’s summer flowers.
Happy loved summers with her family in Nonquitt, ideally running them around the tennis court. Characteristically, she barely acknowledged her hole-in-one on the Nonquitt course because she wasn’t pleased with her round. Happy also loved celebrating Christmas and, rather uncharacteristically, celebrated the holiday in a full-length black velvet dress adorned with a bright red ladybug. She perfected the art of the Irish exit and the backspin drop shot. She could read you like a book. Above all, Happy wore her name well, along with her welcoming smile and rosy cheeks.
Born the only child of two only children, Happy treasured her family above all else. She is survived by her husband, Henley Ross Webb of Marblehead; her daughter, Susannah Webb Danforth and her husband, Don, her son Henley Ross Webb Jr. and his wife, Elana, and her son Seth Osgood Webb and his wife, Judi. She leaves eight grandchildren: Carolyn Danforth Gagliano, Donald Danforth IV, Charles Ross Danforth, Henley Upham Danforth, Courtney Eve Webb, Zachary Burton Blatt, Tyler Osgood Webb, and Adam Hartzell Webb.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the caregivers and hospice staff whose gentle and compassionate care brought comfort to Happy and our entire family, especially Sabrina, Kateryn, Dora, Nikki, Milenny, Naylani, Leanna, Joslee, and The Mariner and Caretenders staff.
A Memorial Service will be held in S. Dartmouth, Ma., this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum in New Bedford, Ma. https://app.dvforms.net/api/dv/zz9x92, or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research www.michaeljfox.org, in memory of Happy Webb. Assisting the family with the services is Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. Salem, MA.
