Harry J. Saffer, age 86, loving husband for 64 years of Beatrice (Couris) Saffer, died Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012 in Salem Hospital surrounded by his family. Born in Salem, the son of the late Bagdasar and Christine (Boisvert) Saffer, he was educated in local schools. Mr. Saffer attended Salem High School until the outbreak of World War II when he joined the United States Marine Corps. In 2002, Mr. Saffer and his brother Leon both were honored to receive their High School Diplomas from Salem High School.
Honorably discharged as a Corporal, his many duties included being machine gun crewman and a flame thrower operator in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations.
A disabled veteran, he was wounded in action in battles at both Periliu and Okinawa. Upon his discharge Mr. Saffer was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
Following his discharge, Mr. Saffer was employed as a roofer. He later worked in the leather industry and at Village Upholstery, until he became a Letter Carrier for over 30 years for the US Post Office in Salem until his retirement.
An active member of the AOH Division 18 in Salem as well as the D.AV, and American Legion, his true passion was his family. Dedicated to his wife and family, he had a great sense of humor and enjoyed taking family pictures as well as family movies. He also enjoyed John Wayne movies, watching television, cards, backgammon the ocean and fishing.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Saffer is survived by two children Denise Webster and her husband Gary of Salisbury, MA and Salem Firefighter Daniel Saffer and his fiancé Diane Waitte of Salem; three brothers Leon Saffer and Alphonse Saffer both of Peabody and Donald Saffer of Salem; five grandchildren, Joseph Webster, Jamie Lyn Webster, Mark, Michael and Jessica Saffer and two great grandchildren Nathaniel Joseph Montanez and Kathryn Elise Montanez and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister Rose Swindell and brother Robert Saffer
His funeral will be held on Saturday April 7, 2012 at 11:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem to be followed by Funeral Services at 12:00 PM in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody, MA 01960. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
