SALEM
Harriet ("Hap") S. Binney, a life long resident of Salem, Massachusetts died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. She was born in Salem on October 16, 1923, the widow of the late Henry ("Hal") P. Binney, Jr. who predeceased her in 1995. Hap was survived by her devoted daughter, Nathalie S. Binney of Salem and son, Henry P. Binney, III of Plymouth, NH, her brother, Francis Augustus Seamans of New London, NH, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her brother, James Otis Seamans, formerly of Phoenix, AZ and New London, NH and her sister, Eleanor S. Petersen, formerly of Tiburon, CA. Hap was the daughter of the late Richard Dodge Seamans and Nathalie Gifford Seamans of Salem.
Hap attended Salem schools and graduated from Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill, MA. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed gardening and horse racing. She was a long-term member of The Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, The Colonial Dames of America, The Thread & Needle Society, The Pickering House, The Peabody-Essex Museum, The House of Seven Gables in Salem and Historic Salem, Inc. and was a member of the former ladies committee of The Essex Institute. She was also a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Salem.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to a memorial reception to be held on Sunday, May 18 at Hamilton Hall, 9 Chestnut St., Salem, MA from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. A private interment will be held in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Hamilton Hall, Inc. (www.hamiltonhall.org).
