Obituary

Gloria Wallis, age 97, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018. Born on Feb. 27, 1920, Gloria lived in her home on Bay View Avenue in Salem Willows from the age of five until she moved to Deveraux Nursing Home in Marblehead in September, 2017 where she was cared for with kindness until her death. Gloria was the daughter of the late Harvey and Alberta Allen of Salem, a graduate of Salem High School Class of 1937, and devoted wife for 57 years to the late Linzee Wallis, Naval Captain and Senior Vice President of Shawmut Bank, N.A. Gloria had two children, Linzee Wallis Jr. of Billings, MT, who predeceased her, and Susan Eisenhaur of Marblehead, MA. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Jon Eisenhaur; grandchildren Jon Michael Eisenhaur and Amy Eisenhaur Thompson; grandson-in-law M. Brian Thompson; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary Eisenhaur and Olivia, Caroline, and Grace Thompson as well as countless friends and neighbors who loved her.

Gloria's life was defined not only by her devotion to her family and the Juniper Point community, but also by her extensive volunteer work. Gloria began her volunteer service in 1953 in the gift shop of the former North Shore Children's Hospital and rose to become a highly-valued voice of stewardship of that institution, including her many years as the hospital gift shop treasurer, president of the Auxiliary Board of Directors, a hospital trustee beginning in 1972 and eventually the President of the Board of Trustees of NSCH, Chairman of the Auxilians Advisory Council, and the Vice President of the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Salem. Her tireless service reached the state level, where she worked as the Health Careers and Legislative Chair of Mass. Hospital Associations Auxilians Advisory Council and First Chair of the New England Hospital Assembly Committee on Auxilians. Her commitment to volunteerism extended to her many years of committed work on behalf of St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Salem, serving as church treasurer and treasurer of St. Peter's Church Capital Funds as well as a Warden and leader of many committees and fundraising efforts; and at the Women's Friend Society, a local organization dedicated to the express purpose of assisting women and girls where she served on the Board of Advisors. The impact of Gloria's work at NSCH in particular is evidenced by the dedication of the Gloria Wallis Building at MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center on 57 Highland Avenue, Salem, in her honor.
