Retired New York City, Board of Education Counselor, George D. Heinz, age 81, husband of Marie A. (Murphy) Heinz, a lifelong resident of New York City died Monday, May 4, 2009 in Salem Hospital. Mr. Heinz and his wife had moved to Salem this past January.
Born in New York, NY the son of the late J. Bruno and May (Downing) Heinz he was raised and educated in New York City. Following his graduation from high school, Mr. Heinz received his Bachelor's Degree from Fordham University,earned his Master's Degree at Catholic University and was presented his Doctorate degree from the University of Florence (Italy).
Mr. Heinz had served in the U.S. Foreign Service. He later became a counselor for the New York City Board of Education working with students in transition for many years until retiring. A Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Bronx, NY, he was also a member of the Salem Athaneum.
Mr. Heinz was an avid reader, world traveler and linguist fluent in Italian and Spanish, he was very interested in foreign languages and learned them easily. He was a compassionate, friendly, outgoing individual who loved people.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Heinz is survived by a niece Catherine Schultz of Burr Ridge, IL; a brother in law Joseph Murphy and his wife Judith and their children Brenna Murphy of Salem, Megan Moynihan of Portland, ME and Joseph Murphy of Beverly; a sister in law Mary Murphy of Salem and her children Kate Murphy of San Francisco, CA and Michael Murphy of Lauderdale by the Sea, FL.
His funeral will be held on Friday, May 8, 2009 at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., cor of North St., Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
