Salem – George Economides, age 97, of Salem passed away Friday October 7, 2016 after a brief illness. After the untimely death of his parents John and Maria, George was raised in Worcester from the age of 8 by his Aunt and Uncle, James and Catherine Stamos.  George was a World War II Army veteran and after his honorable discharge, he attended Scott Carbee School of Art and the Mass College of Art under the GI Bill. Following graduation he became an Art Teacher in Revere and later Medford until his retirement.

George was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Stella for over 58 years until her passing in 2005. He loved spending time with his family, and always had a camera in hand to capture the memories of the event. He was an avid Red Sox fan, would not miss a televised tennis match, and was deeply rooted in the arts.  George was active in the Salem Peace Committee and had a socially conscious outlook.

George is predeceased by his loving wife Stella (Georgeopoulos) Economides, his brothers Alex and Jimmy, and his cousins Bill Stamos and Frances (Stamos) Xanthaky. He is survived by his son John Economides and his wife Denise of Winthrop, his daughter Maria Dolan and her husband Ed of Swampscott, his grandsons Jim Economides and Scott Dolan, his granddaughters Diane Economides and Alana Dolan, his great grandchildren Madison and Taylor Economides, as well as many others in his close-knit extended family.

Visiting hours for George will take place from 4 to 8PM on Thursday October 13, 2016 at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St.(cor. of North St.) Salem, MA 01970. His funeral will take place Friday October 14, 2016 at 10AM, also at the Murphy Funeral Home with interment to follow at Greenlawn Cemetery 57 Orne St. Salem, MA.  For those that wish, please consider making a donation to Raw Artworks, 37 Central Square #2, Lynn, MA 01901 in George's memory.
