Fredrick Dennis Mattei passed away on July 7, 2026 after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Everett on October 12, 1948, the son of the late Alfred J. and late Iolanda M. (Penna) Mattei. He spent his childhood in Malden, attending Belmont Elementary and BeeBe Jr. High and summers at Maplewood Caddie Camp.
The family moved to Marblehead in ‘63, he and his father opened ‘Super Sub’ in Peabody, first of many shops in Salem and Marblehead. Fred graduated from Marblehead High in ‘67. After acceptance into Boston University, he was drafted into the US Army. He served in Vietnam, as a Ranger in the Americal Division. Back home, he continued running Super Sub, then joined the National Guard in ‘73, serving 4 years. Continuing the Super Sub legacy, he opened Salem Super Sub in ‘78. Retiring from slinging subs, he became an Auctioneer and Real Estate Agent for Taché Real Estate. A Salem resident since 1976, he enjoyed the city’s nightlife and restaurants. He treasured tending to his flowers, along with feeding local birds and squirrels.
He loved road trips, especially the family’s yearly trip to Canada to visit the in-laws. Fred never truly retired, traveling all over the North Shore as an insurance inspector and loved posting restaurant reviews. His greatest passion was Corvettes, especially his Marina Blue ’67 (Yvette), bought with his own money as a high school senior, and later his White T-top ’73 (Suzette).
Fred is survived by his wife, Cécile (Haché) Mattei; his sons, Sam and Dennis Mattei and his wife, Vanessa; his beloved granddaughter, Lily, all of Salem; his sister, Vivien Mattei of Beverly; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; dear friends and countless satisfied customers.
Visiting hours for Fred will be held on July 16, 2026, at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem from 3PM–7PM, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM.
