Frank H. Healey, Jr., MD age 83, husband for almost sixty years of Barbara (Pattee) Healey died at following a long illness Thursday, February 19, 2009.

Born and raised in Salem, MA the son of the late Frank H and Teresa (Haley) Healey, Sr., he was graduated from Salem High School, Class of l942. Dr Healey then served in the U.S. Navy, from 1943 to 1946.


Following his discharge he received his Bachelors degree from Harvard College, Class of l946 and in 1943 he was in the Hasty Pudding production of "Speak for Yourself John". He received his medical degree from Tufts Medical School in 1951.
Dr. Healey served his internship and residency from l951-l955 at University Hospitals of Cleveland and established his private practice in Internal Medicine in Salem in 1955.

A member of the medical staffs of Salem Hospital, J.B.Thomas Hospital, Mary Alley Hospital, and Danvers State Hospital Dr. Healey had served as President of Salem Hospital Medical Staff, l977-1978 as well as Medical Director Marblehead Walk-In Center 1984-1996.


Active in the community, he had served on Board of Trustees at the Salem Y.M.C.A.and the Bertram House for Aged Men. In addition he had served the Chairman of Board of both the Marblehead Council on Aging and Chairman of Board of North Shore Elder Services.


Frank was a lifelong sailor, who raced his own Lightning, and crewed in World Regattas in Toronto, Buenos Aires, and Helsinki. He was also a regular participant in both the Halifax and Bermuda races. An avid fly fisherman, Dr. Healey took great pleasure and pride in tying his own flies. He was a Frostbiting enthusiast until his children were old enough to ski, and then the family all became avid skiers. He enjoyed hand-ball and squash as well.
He and wife Barbara were opera enthusiasts, and for most of their married life, spent Saturday afternoons from December to April listening to the Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts. During their courting days when the Met toured Boston, they appeared as supernumeraries in Verdi's Rigoletto.


Dearest to his heart was Harvard Football. He and Barbara were season's ticket holders for years. In recent years he listened to the games on radio, but best of all when televised, inviting friends to join him in a living room tailgate. For many years he had been an active member of the Whitiing Club.


He leaves five children, Sharon and Jonathan Malay of Fredericksburg, VA; Peter and Ai Choo Healey of Austin, Texas; Frank Healey III of Raleigh, N.C.; Jananne Healey of San Antonio, Texas; and Mary Jo and her husband Barney Strobel of Centennial, CO; and twelve grandchildren, Elizabeth Warner of Denver,CO; Lt. Benjamin Malay, USN and Kelley Malay of San Diego, CA; Katherine Malay of New York, N.Y; Brenda and Sean Healey of Austin, Texas; Siobhan Healey of Golden CO; Declan Healey of Salt Lake City, Utah; Claire, Ciara and Ashlyn Healey of Raleigh, N.C.; Carl and Jack Strobel of Centennial, CO.

His funeral will be held Monday at 10:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal ST., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Interment will be in Star of the Sea Cemetery, Marblehead.
