F. Gerard "Jerry" Leahy, age 81, loving husband for 59 years of Kathleen (Sweeney) Leahy of Salem, died Sunday afternoon in the North Shore Medical Center, Salem.
Born and raised in Salem the son of the late Thomas J. and Leona M. (Caron) Leahy, he attended Salem Schools until serving in the United States Navy during World War II in China and Japan. In 2004, Salem High School honored Mr. Leahy with his High School Diploma since he had left school to serve his country. Following his discharge, Mr. Leahy worked in local leather shops until becoming employed by Eastman Gelatin for over 25 years until retiring in 1988.
Mr. Leahy and his wife enjoyed dancing and spending time with friends in their local couples club. He was also a member of the A.O.H. Division 18, Salem, where he was a life member as well as at the Victori Rocci Post in Beverly. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and had been active with the Salem and Peabody Senior Citizens. Most of all he was a proud grandfather.
Beside his wife, Mr. Leahy is survived by four children; John Leahy and his wife Darlene of Jupiter, FL, Kevin Leahy and his wife Bernadette of Beverly, MA, Annmarie Marino and her husband Mark of Lynnfield, MA, and Ellen Van Loon and her husband William of Salem, MA; a sister Sally Butler and her husband Paul of Salem, MA and a sister in Law Claire Leahy of Salem, MA; Eight grandchildren Ryan, Conor, Aaron, Sean and Bridget Leahy, Will and Dillon Van Loon, and Jacqueline Marino and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Leahy.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at 9:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (corner of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St James Church, 161 Federal St., Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
