Obituary

Salem…..

Everett W. "Bud" Hobbs, age 88, beloved husband for 40 years of Patricia (Maurais) Hobbs died in Shaughnessy Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital Thursday evening.

Born and raised in Lynn the son of the late Ralph E. and Florence (Felton) Hobbs, he was graduated from Lynn Classical High School. He attended Boston University where he studied meteorology until the start of WW II. During WWII he was a meteorologist for the United States Army Air Corps, stationed in India.

Mr. Hobbs is a Salem Willows icon spending nearly all of his life at the family business, E.W. Hobbs, Inc., a business established by his great grandfather in 1892. Over the years he mastered wonderful summer treats of saltwater taffy, popcorn, ice cream, peanuts as well as burger and hot dogs. Mr. Hobbs enjoyed all of the "kids" that he employed as well his customers. His keen wit and great sense of humor always came through as he shared a good story. He took great pride in his family and watching the business grow into its fourth, fifth and sixth generation of operation.

In his childhood years his work ethic was balanced with his passion for the water, sailing and racing sailboats. A member of the Cat Boat Association, much of his free time for many years was spent both working on and racing boats. He also built many boats including the "Willow Belle", "Shadow", "Chocolate Pudding", "Priscilla", and "Korn-Tiki". In the summer he enjoyed competing in (and winning) the cardboard boat races during heritage days, a race record he held for many years. He also enjoyed bareboat sailing trips to the Caribbean in the winter with family and friends.

He was a member of the Salem Willows Yacht Club, of which his father was a founding member. Mr. Hobbs served as Treasurer from 1961-1965 and was later recognized by the membership as Honorary Commodore for Life. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his family.

A Salem Willows icon, he was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hobbs is survived by four children, William L. Hobbs and his wife Rosalie of Swampscott, Deirdre F. Morneau and her husband Edmond of Salem, Priscilla A. Hobbs of Salem and Charles E. Hobbs of Salem; a daughter in law Lorraine Hobbs of Beverly; eight grandchildren, Jason, Eric, William, Marisa, Jaclyn, Kristen, Jenny Star, and Jack; two great grandchildren Prestin Star and Cage; a sister in law Jane Hobbs formerlhy of Salem now of NH and many nieces and nephews.
