Evelyn (Ortins) Cunha age 71 of Peabody died at home Thursday afternoon following a brief illness with cancer. She was the soul mate and wife for 52 years of the late Manuel F. Cunha who predeceased her in April 2008.
Born and raised on the Island of Graciosa in the Azores, she was the daughter of the late Gregorio and Rose (Silva) Ortins. After marrying she and her husband moved to and settled in Peabody in 1956. Mrs. Cunha then became employed for over 30 years by Sylvania on Endicott St, Danvers, where she was never late or missed a day of work. She was also a member of the Sylvania Quarter Century Club.
She and her husband enjoyed being together and traveling. One of her most memorable trips was a pilgrimage to Israel, where under the guidance of Fr. Jose Ferreira, they had the opportunity to visit all of the shrines. Her true passion was entertaining. Her home was always open to family, friends, neighbors and anyone who wanted to visit. She loved to maintain her gardens, which were always perfect as well as swimming in the ocean.
Mrs. Cunha is survived by two brothers Manuel Ortins and Tony and his wife Noelia Ortins all of Peabody; her nieces and nephews Richard and Diane Bettencourt, Anthony and Joanne Ortins, Roy Ortins, Albert and Danielle Ortins, and Diana and Joe Mendonca and many great nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters Elza Bettencourt and Maria Ortins and a nephew Michael Ortins in April of this year.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 28 at 10:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Monday from 4:00P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
