Elizabeth Kane Weyforth died Thursday, November 12, 2015 at Putnam Farm in Danvers, Massachusetts.
Born to Claire Maguire Kane and William James Kane, Liz grew up in Washington, DC, attended Immaculata Seminary, Mt. Saint Agnes High School, and graduated from Notre Dame University in Maryland. As a young woman, she was a passionate ballerina. After college, she taught elementary school at the Friends School of Baltimore, and married Philip A. Weyforth of Baltimore, MD.
In 1964, the couple moved to Pennsylvania where they lived for forty years. In Radnor, Liz taught at the Rosemont School of the Holy Child, was an active participant and volunteer in her parish, St. Katharine of Siena, and volunteered for the Bryn Mawr Hospital, the Devon Horse Show, and a therapy dog organization. In the summers, Liz and Phil resided in Kennebunk Beach, Maine where they were members of the Edgcomb Tennis Club and the Eagle Rock Yacht Club.
After retiring, Liz and Phil moved to Massachusetts to be closer to their daughter and her family. In Salem, Liz played tennis and took dance classes, enjoyed courses with the Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute and events at the Salem Athenaeum, attended the Hamilton Hall Lecture Series, and volunteered at the Bertram House and at Immaculate Conception Church. She greatly appreciated the friends she made through these activities, and the welcome she received from her Salem Common neighborhood. For many years, Liz was a well-recognized figure in town along with her dog Emma who accompanied her everywhere she walked.
Elizabeth leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia W. Newhall and Charles L. Newhall, her beloved grandchildren, John B. Newhall and Sarah E. Newhall, all of Salem, Massachusetts, and her loving and devoted brother, Msgr. William J. Kane of Bethesda, Maryland.
A funeral mass in celebration of Liz's life will be held at Immaculate Conception Church (30 Union Street, Salem, MA) on December 1st at 11 o'clock, followed immediately by burial at Harmony Grove Cemetery. A reception following the burial will be held at the Hawthorne Hotel in the Sophia Room. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Care Dimensions (caredimensions.org), American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (aspca.org), or Pax Christi (paxchristiusa.org).
