Elizabeth F. "Betty" (Carlton) Delaney, age 92, wife of the late Lieutenant Colonel Joseph J. Delaney, U.S. Army, Retired died in the Ledgewood Nursing Home, Beverly, Tuesday, May 18, 2010 following a long illness.

Born in Salem the daughter of the late George H. and Theresa R. (Callahan) Carlton, she was educated in Salem Schools, graduating from Salem High School in the Class of 1938. Mrs. Delaney then became employed by New England Telephone Company in Salem as an operator until marrying her late husband, a United States Army career officer.

Mrs. Delaney traveled with her husband during his military assignments .
Initially, Lt. Col. Delaney was a member of the National Guard, Yankee Division in Massachusetts. He was then stationed in KIlma, NJ until he was deployed to Germany during the post World War II years. Upon his return to the United States, Lt. Col. Delaney was stationed at Fr. Myers in Arlington VA until his retirement. At that time they continued to make their home in Falls Church, VA for several years. More recently, Mrs. Delaney has lived on the North Shore to be closer to her family.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Gilbert of Peabody and Edith Colbert and her husband Edward of Salem and many nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. James Chapel, 161 Federal St., Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Graveside Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, VA June 17, 2010 at 9:00A.M.
