Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Elizabeth F. "Betsy" Lubas, age 84 of Lynn, announce her passing away peacefully on March 16, 2025, at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.

Born in Washington DC, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Anita C. (Clement) Bickford.   In her childhood years, Betsy's family moved often due to her father's career as a pilot.  Eventually, she moved to Hamilton MA to live with her mother where she graduated from Hamilton/Wenham High School.  After graduation, she worked for the New England Telephone & Telegraph company in Salem, MA as a telephone operator. This employment led her to meet her life-long best friends of 60+ years who called themselves the 'Emmerton Girls'.  It was this friendship that led her to meet the love of her life, John J. Lubas (her "Johnny Cakes") on a blind date.  The rest is history as they celebrated their marriage of 54 years together.  Throughout her marriage, she proudly raised three children.  Along with being a mother, she enjoyed being an avid reader, loved playing card games and bridge, had a passion for cooking and especially enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano.  Family time included packing up the car for road trips to enjoy the foliage in the Fall (her favorite season) or a camping trip in the summer.  She loved animals, especially her cat Mitsy and her dog Mugsy.  Later she took pride in owning her cleaning business called "Betzee's" Cleaning Service (with her husband by her side).

In the early 1970's, Betsy studied with and became one of Jehovah's Witnesses along with her husband, John.  She made many life-long friendships from decades in the Peabody/Salem Congregation.  Her faith in Jehovah was very important to her.   In her last few years, she resided in a skilled nursing facility in Wilmington.  She was loved by the residents and staff and known for always smiling and her positive attitude.  On any given day, you could see her having fun in the activity room, reading the daily newsletter to everyone, playing games, participating in arts & crafts (coloring being her favorite), and still playing the piano.  She always looked forward to her weekly visits from her daughters whether it was going to her favorite restaurant or taking a walk to a park or sitting at the lake enjoying the view.

She is survived by her three children (or as she would say: "I've got three of these"):  Christine D. Sullivan of Lynn, Lorianne Lubas and partner Daniel Rooney of Rowley, Rebecca E. Skeleton of Lynn and her partner Thomas Vicente; two grandchildren:  Thomas J. Sullivan and his partner Lynde Bruce of Saugus, and Jessica L. Sullivan of Lynn; one great grandchild Dylan J. Sullivan; her niece Jeanne Kratohwill and husband Joseph of Pennsylvania, her nephew William Andrey and wife Lisa of Pennsylvania and their families.  She was the wife of late John J. Lubas and the sister of the late Diane Davis of Pennsylvania.

A memorial for Betsy will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 3pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 79 Endicott Street, Peabody MA 01960. For further information and an online guestbook, please call the Murphy Funeral Home at 978-744-0497 or visit www.MurphyFuneralHome.com.
