Eleanor (McDonald) (Dibble) Derby, 78, wife of the late George C Derby, of Salem, died unexpectedly at North Shore Medical Center in Salem, following a brief illness.


A devout Catholic woman, she was born one of triplets including Marie Lane and the late Louise Poulin in Boston. The family was raised and educated in Newton, MA, attending Our Lady of Help Christian Parish. Following her graduation from New Trinity High School, Mrs. Derby became employed by New England Telephone as a switchboard operator. Later she moved to Dorchester where she raised her five children as a single mother.


In 1991, Mrs. Derby moved to Salem. She was President of the Pioneer Terrace Senior Association. A wonderful loving grandmother, the center of her life was her grandchildren who loved and adored her.


Mrs. Derby is survived by five children: Mary Grace and her husband Steve Marceau of Cranston, RI, William Dibble III of Wellsville, NY, Leo "Skip" Dibble of Medford, Steve and his wife Jean Dibble of Salem, and John Derby of Oxford; 10 grandchildren: Kerri Marceau of Warwick, RI, Melissa (Marceau) Mennella of Warwick, RI, Joseph Marceau of Cranston, RI, Heidi Dibble of Warwick, RI, Jenny Dibble of Salem, Nathaniel, Samuel and Benjamin Dibble all of Salem, John Derby of New Bedford, and Hannah Derby of Topsfield; one great grandchild Evan Dwyer of Warwick, RI; two sisters: Faith and her husband John Wilson of Sudbury, and Marie and her husband Alton Lane of Stoughton; a brother in law Paul Poulin of Grafton and her extensive friends throughout Newton, Dorchester and Salem, especially her dear friends at Pioneer Terrace where she resided.


She was predeceased by her sisters Louise Poulin, RN and Mary Lou and her husband Danny Halloran.


Her funeral will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 9:00 AM in St. Anne Church, 292 Jefferson Ave, Salem. A collation will follow in the parish center. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. At the Family's request there are no visiting hours. Interment will be private.
