Obituary

Salem ….

Elayne M.(Collins) Hart, age 78, of Salem, closed the door on a gentle passage of her life and died on Saturday, April 21st, 2012. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and aunt.

She is survived by her children, Janis Hart and her partner Medora Marisseau and their children, Nancy and James of Seattle; Sharon and her husband Thomas McCabe and their children Elayne and Paul of Salem; and Donna and her husband John Wholley and their twin boys Billy and Jake of Beverly. She is also survived by her sister Janis Collins and her children Jeff and his wife Paula Marrs and their children Kristen and Mathew; Elayne and her husband Rick Bernbaum and Cheryl and her husband Paul Catoggio.

She was predeceased by her mother Marguerite V. Collins, her grandfather James R. Dooley and three uncles, Daniel Dooley, Robert Dooley, and Phillip Dooley.

Elayne was born in 1933 in Salem and graduated from Salem High School as President of the Student Council and class Valedictorian. She earned a Bachelor's Degree from Boston University where she also served as President of the Panhellenic Conference, Vice-President of Sigma Kappa, and was a member of the Scarlet Key. She worked for the Salem Housing Authority and served as its first female Executive Director for 12 years. Her favorite programs were working with the J. Michael Ruane Mixed Housing Program and the Federal Family Program.

Elayne was an avid golfer but her greatest pleasure in life was her grandchildren. She will be truly missed by family and friends alike. Her family is very grateful to Massachusetts General Hospital and the Kaplan Family Hospice House for the wonderful care she had received.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, April 26, at 8:15 A.M be from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor. of North St) Salem, to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM in St. James Church, 156 Federal St, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4 to 7 P.M. in the funeral home. Internment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
