Obituary

Elaine (O'Donnell) Hughes passed away peacefully at Lafayette Nursing home in Marblehead at age 96 on June 7, 2023.

Elaine was the daughter of Captain George O'Donnell of the Boston Police Department and Jennie (Angela) Crescio O'Donnell of Boston, Massachusetts.  Elaine grew up in Boston during the Great Depression.  During World War 2 her father and high school friends went off to war.  The description by her picture in the 1944 Hyde Park High School yearbook said: "Elaine O'Donnell, bright of face, Full of beauty, charm and grace, Skillful too we all admit, Loving, kind and keen of wit."  She and her mother relocated to Manhattan where she met and married James J. Hughes.  Elaine would say that the high point of her life was raising her three children which she did in Westlake, Ohio and Bethel Park, PA.  She began a 25 year career at Price Waterhouse in Pittsburgh and beginning in 1989 in Boston, when she returned to be near her father.  After retiring, she moved to Virginia Beach, VA for almost 20 years to be near her son Jim and his family.  In 2016 she moved to Salem, MA to live with her daughter, Sharon.  Elaine continued to enjoy her favorite activity, spending time with family, her whole life.

She loved sending a good greeting card, words of love underlined, and scented with her perfume. She loved the holidays, especially Christmas, and loved to buy gifts.  She loved to shop, especially on her lunch breaks at Price Waterhouse and in her retirement in Virginia Beach.  She loved to cook for her family, especially Italian Beef Stew, and Baked Stuffed Shrimp for family gatherings.

Elaine is survived by her son Jim Hughes and his wife Lucinda Hughes of Charleston, SC, her daughter Sharon Hughes Williams and her husband David Williams of Salem, MA, her grandchildren Angela Hughes Clements of Virginia Beach, VA, Rich Hughes of Charleston, SC, Kristen Price Birth of Stephens City, VA, Michael Williams of Salem, MA, her great grandchildren Reagan Clements Bentz, Chase Clements, Olivia Clements, Parker Hughes and Harrison Hughes of Charleston, SC,  Colette Birth, and Elayne Price Birth, and her great great granddaughter Maylin Bentz, her sister Mary Ann Pezzullo of Melbourne, FL, and her nephew Craig Barkhausen of Rockaway, NJ.  Elaine was predeceased by her beloved daughter Colette Hughes Price of Ashburn, VA.

A wake will be held at Murphy's Funeral Home on Friday July 14th from 5-7pm.  Funeral Mass will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Salem, MA on Saturday July 15th at 11am.  Interment will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester on Monday July 17th at 11am.
