Edward J. "Kooch" Vieira, age 78, loving husband for 28 years of Gertrude (Rivard) (Stuart) Vieira died Saturday evening in the Blueberry Hill Nursing Home, surrounded by his family.
He was raised on his family's farm in Peabody and once he completed his education was employed by Bettencourt Tanning in Lawrence for over 30 years. Mr. Vieira then became employed as a custodian for more than 15 years at the Peabody Institute Library until his retirement.
An avid Peabody High School football fan, he always enjoyed the annual Thanksgiving Peabody High School football game. He was well known for his vegetable and flower gardens and was a real people person. Mr. Vieira was frequently found at the North Shore Mall visiting with his many friends and sharing stories.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Vieira is survived by three children Cynthia Vieira of East Boston, Edward Vieira Jr. and his wife Kathy and their children Kyle and Zachary of Peabody, and Susan Tranfaglia and her husband Michael and their children Joshua and Jeremy of Lynn; four step children Deborah Valentine and her children Shawn, Vanessa, and Dominic of Peabody, Barbara Bush-Dullea and her husband Michael and their son Cori of Lynn, Michael Stuart and his wife Nancy and their son Michael of Salem and Terry Medeiros and her husband Joe and their children Michael, Marc, Jamie, Dianna and Joseph of Middleton and 10 great grandchildren; and a sister Angelina Mello and her husband Daniel of Peabody; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret (Sweeney) Vieira;his mother Mary (Cunha) Vieira and two brothers Manuel and Joseph Vieira and a sister Sara Bettencourt.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 12 at 10:15A.M.m from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. in St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Church St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
