Obituary

Edith "Edie" Ann (Carlton) Colbert, 97, of Salem, passed away on February 9th, 2024, after a brief illness.

Born February 14, 1926, in Salem MA, Edie was the daughter of George H. Carlton and Theresa R. (Callahan) Carlton and the sister of Elizabeth F. Delaney and Mary A. Gilbert.

Edie attended Salem public schools and graduated from Salem High in 1943.  She married Edward F. Colbert at St James Rectory while Ed was home on a 3-day pass in 1944 and together they shared 66 years of marriage.  Except for briefly living in Staten Island, NY, Harrisburg, PA and New Orleans, LA during World War II, Edie was a lifelong resident of Salem.  Prior to and during the early years of her marriage, Edie was a salesclerk at Newmark's in Salem.  She also worked in the domestics department at Rich's department store in Salem and at Eastern Bank preparing checking account statements. She was an active member of the St James Women's Guild during the 1960s and 1970s. After she and Ed retired, they enjoyed traveling to places such as Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, AK, AZ, CA, CO, FL, Washington DC, and VA.

Edie is survived by her children Suzanne E. Porter of Meredith, NH, Dennis W. Colbert of Salem, Steven E. Colbert and his wife Maryann of Peabody, MA, Michael D. Colbert and his wife Kim of Hampstead, NH and Christopher J. Colbert and his wife Christine of Edgartown, MA.

She was the grandmother of Jennifer (Porter) Curtin and her husband Brian of Hampstead, NH, Jason E. Porter and his wife Meagan of Milton, VT, Daniel C. Colbert and his wife Jenna of Clinton, MA, Katherine E. (Colbert) Prescott and her husband Rowen of Newfields, NH, Caroline M. Colbert and her partner Royce Conlin of Sandown, NH, Meaghan E. Colbert and her partner Robert Forte of Hampstead, NH, Brian E. Colbert, Kevin M. Colbert and his partner Ali Garofano of Del Mar, CA, Sarah M. C. Colbert and her partner Louis Neville of New York and Eamon C. Colbert of New York.

She was the great-grandmother of Caeley, Michael and Jack Curtin, Sadie and Jake Porter, Lily Colbert, Cleo, Clara and R.E. Prescott and Evan Forte.

Edie is also survived by her cousin Eleanor (Ezekiel) Richards of Agawam, MA and several very dear nieces, nephews and friends.

Edie was predeceased by her husband Edward F. Colbert (2010), her grandson Brian E. Colbert (2014), her sister Elizabeth F. Delaney (2010), her sister Mary A. Gilbert (2012), her sister-in-law Madelyn (O'Connell) Creutz (2021) and her dear friend Ruth E. (Daley) Wiseman (2022).

Edie's family wishes to thank the staff at Ledgewood SNF for their compassion extended to Edie and her family.

Visiting hours will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, Salem, MA on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 4 to 7 pm.  A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 10 AM at the funeral home followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, 226 North St, Salem, MA.
