Obituary

Dorothy Marie (Belanger) Barney, 84, of Marblehead and Hobe Sound, Florida, died Saturday November 25, 2017 surrounded by her family.
Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and raised in Andover and on the beaches of Naugus Head, Marblehead, she was the daughter of the late Napoleon and Helen (McDermott) Belanger.
A graduate of Punchard High School, Andover and Dean Junior College, Dottie started her career with New England Telephone. She was to work for the "phone company" numerous times over the years. While working in the Lawrence office she was introduced to her boss's cousin, Richard Barney. Their courtship was short, but their love and marriage were eternal, celebrating their 60 th wedding anniversary just last year. Before Dick's passing in March of this year, Dick and Dottie split their time between Marblehead and Hobe Sound Florida, where she could be found walking the beach collecting shells or golfing with friends. But home always remained Naugus Head and the friends and neighbors she adored.
Staunch advocates in the fight for special education in the public schools, their daughter Mary had no greater parents and advocates when it came to her education. They were very proud of Mary and her accomplishments.
Over the years Dottie became a docent at both the Jeremiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead and the House of the Seven Gables in Salem, MA. The friendships made with the other volunteers enriched her life tremendously, including her regular lunches with "The Girls" at "The Willows."
But more than anything, Dottie was a loving, fun mother and grandmother. She is survived by her three children, Captain Steven (Tami) Barney of Sandwich, MA, Patricia (Joel) Rosenthal of Fairfield, CT and Mary Beth Barney of Plymouth, MA. Her grandchildren were the sparkle in her eye : Richard and James Barney, Sarah and David Rosenthal.  Their sense of humor can be directly traced to their grandmother. She is also survived by her dear cousin Mary Reilly. Never a day passed without a laughter filled telephone call between the two. Dottie was predeceased by her beloved brother Raymond Belanger.
Her Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead on Friday at 10:00 A.M.  Burial at Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.  There are no visiting hours.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, Salem.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to LIFE, Inc., 550 Lincoln Road Ext., Hyannis, MA  02601, www.lifecapecod.org and please reference Dorothy on contribution.  For additional information or online guest book please call 781-631-8885 or visit www.MurphyFuneralHome.com
