Doris (Devenish) Kennedy, RN age 100, wife of the late Norman Kennedy, died Saturday morning, March 31, 2012 in the Lafayette Nursing Home, Marblehead after living a long and loving life as daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother as being a wonderful coworker and friend to many.
Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Sullivan) Devenish, Mrs. Kennedy had enjoyed playing basketball while pursing her education and earned her nursing degree. Her extensive career began as a Registered Nurse at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. She later became the Chief Anestesist at the Lying In Hospital also in Boston. Her avocation however was working with the American Red Cross Bloodmobiles organizing and supporting blood drives.
Always active in the Catholic Church wherever she resided, Mrs. Kennedy has been an active member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church for more then 50 years. During that time she has served as President of the Sodality and been very active with the Centering Prayer Group. Most important to her has been family, faith and nursing as well as the opportunity for a round of golf with her friends.
Predeceased by her daughter, Ann Marie Kennedy, she is survived by two grandchildren, Richard J. Burke Jr., and Peter K Burke and his wife Allison all of Marblehead; three great grandchildren Andrew K. John D. and Colin K. Burke and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers Joseph and Arthur Devenish.
Her funeral will be held on Wednesday , April 4, 2012 at 9:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (corner of North St) Salem) to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the funeral home. Interment will be in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
