Donald S. Emmerton, Jr. age 91, husband of the late Ann J. (Walsh) Emmerton of Salem died Saturday, February 27, 2010 in the Rosewood Nursing Home.

A lifelong resident of Salem and communicant of St. James Church, he was born and raised in Salem the son of the late Donald S. and Alice F. (Almy) Emmerton. Following his graduation from Salem High School, Mr. Emmerton attended New Hampton Prep School in New Hampton, NH. During World War II he served in the United States Army as a combat medic in Europe participating in several campaigns including the D-Day Invasion.

Once he was discharged from the service, Mr. Emmerton was employed in the family business, Almy's Department Store. He operated the shipping department for many years and had been a member of the bowling team until his retirement.

He was a lifelong member of the Salem Disabled American Veteran's (D.A.V) Post 84 and the American Legion. Mr. Emmerton also enjoyed playing the drums and listening to jazz music.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews Paul J. Higgins of Salem, Leo J. Higgins of Peabody, Judith Baker of Dover, MA, John Walsh of Salem, David Walsh of CA and Rosemary Waldo of Boxford and many great nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a nephew John M. Higgins.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St James Church, 161 Federal St., Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will be immediately before the funeral Wednesday morning from 8:30 A.M. to 9:30 A.M. prior to the funeral. Interment will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery.
