Obituary

Dominic Rosario Marraffa, 93, of Salem passed away peacefully on June 3, 2024.  Born in Salem, MA to Rosario and Theresa (Jalbert) Marraffa, Dominic grew up in the Italian section on High Street where he ran the Newspaper Stand in front of St Mary's Italian Church as well as worked at the produce stand at the Old Stop & Shop on Derby Street.  At 16 he started odd jobs in construction and upon graduating from Salem High School he joined Laborer's Local #14 where he later took over as Business Manager and Secretary/Treasurer for twenty years succeeding his father, Rosario.

After joining the Navy Dominic returned home to marry his High School Sweetheart Dolores Provencher and they had six beautiful children together. Family for Dominic was his highest priority prompting many celebratory gatherings with everyone!

Dominic was an outstanding athlete throughout his life in basketball, track and football playing Quarterback in both High School and the Navy where he was named Captain of the Naval Base Football Team.  He was stationed in Newport, RI and served during the Korean War on the USS Des Moines.

In addition to acting as Vice President of the North Shore Building Trades Council as well as appointments to several Labor Union committees, he also acted as Chairman of the Board at the Salem Housing Authority for several years as well as the Salem Redevelopment Authority.  He was also appointed to the North Shore Community College Advisory Board by Governors Francis Sargent and Michael Dukakis.

Dominic enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and puttering about in the yard as well as spending time enjoying the company of family and friends. He was an exceptional storyteller fascinating all who listened to his endless adventures. He was gifted with an amazing sense of humor that brought joy and laughter to all around him.  He was a beloved coach, mentor, and role model to many youths in Salem (Salem Rec Beavers & Pony League Owls) as well as a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.

Dominic is survived by his daughters Susan Marraffa of Salisbury, Judi Marraffa of Salem, sons Dominic Marraffa Jr and his wife Kellie of Derry, NH, and Tony Marraffa and his partner Kim Teves of Fairhaven. His Grandchildren Josselyn, Alli, Jamey, Kyle, Perry, Dominic, Kasey, AJ, Emily and Anthony.  His Great Grandchildren Jacoby, Sadie, Bodey, Mikey, Maeve, and Bobby. His sister Eleanor Lapham and his brother Eddie Marraffa. He was predeceased by his wife Dolores and daughters Pamela Lavoie and Linda St Pierre.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024, from 4 to 8pm at Murphys Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem, MA.  Funeral Mass Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 10:00am at St James Church, 160 Federal St, Salem followed by burial at Greenlawn Cemetery.
