David A. Murtaugh, retired Salem Firefighter, age 82, died Sunday February 22, 2015 in Port Orange, Florida. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Thomas and Ruth (Larkin) Murtaugh. He was educated in Salem Public Schools. Following his education, Mr. Murtaugh entered the United States Army and served his Country during the Korean War. Upon returning from the War, he became a Firefighter in the City of Salem. He was employed with the City for over 20 years.
During his retirement, Mr. Murtaugh traveled the United States extensively with his twin brother Don. They traveled for over twenty years. He enjoyed panning for gold in Alaska and mining for gemstones in the mid-west. He and his brother Don had settled in Port Orange Florida in the late 1990's. Mr. Murtaugh was a great father and his children always came first.
Surviving him are his three children, Brenda Murtaugh and Patrick Murtaugh both of Salem and Kathleen Murtaugh of Aurora, CO, three brothers and sister, his identical twin Donald Murtaugh of Port Orange, FL, James Murtaugh of Santa Barbara, CA and Gerry Avigian and her husband Dick of Salem, two grandchildren, David Murtaugh of Ohio and Kelliann Peterson of Colorado, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Patricia Cyr.
His Funeral Service will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home 85 Federal St., (cor of North St.) Salem on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Visiting hours at the Murphy Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead at a later date.
